Getting Started with SEO

I’m learning some new things about Search Engine Optimization, and I’ll post to this blog from time to time about what I’m learning.

“Search Engine Optimization is often about making small modifications to parts of your website.” – Google.

Search Engine Optimization is a comprehensive task. There aren’t one or two magic bullets to make your site appear overnight. It can be a slow process. But by giving small attention to numerous areas you can effectively increase your rankings and be found.

One thing to keep in mind with SEO though, is that we make websites for PEOPLE, not search engines. So really, the broadest advice I can give about SEO is to have a website that is useful for people. That means good content, relevant imagery, descriptive titles and URL’s, etc. If the page is helpful for people you’re off to a good start.

I think one of the biggest challenges with SEO is just getting started. So today I wanted to share one thing you can do that will start to lead you in the right direction. It’s really pretty simple.

Keyword Phrases

When writing content for your website, it’s helpful to think in terms of phrases. These are 3-5 words about what your page or post will be about. You then use these words (word grouping) in a few key places. One is the title of the post. The other is the URL or address. The last is in the body of your text. By using and repeating these words you reinforce the topic or theme of your page. It also increases the likelihood that your page will be found when someone types in those words to Google. Your content will be a match. So come up with your topic, decide on your best keywords or word grouping, and use it throughout the post. This will help your performance.

This is something you can incorporate into every page, post, or product on your website. Make each page unique. Give each page a specific title and topic, and use that throughout the page.

Need help coming up with keywords or topics to write about? Check out the Google Keyword Planner. It gives you information on what people are searching for. Might be a good starting point.

Just to recap, the most important thing about SEO is to make good websites. Period. Create something useful for people, and make it easy to use. The other important thing is to just get started. Do a couple simple things to improve your site, like coming up with keyword groupings. A little bit of effort goes a long way.
